Enteral Feeding and Management

This program is delivered by AHPRA Registered Nurses.

Developed for support workers providing assistance to people who have Enteral Feeding needs.

Enteral nutrition (EN) is the provision of liquid nutrition via a feeding tube into our digestive system. It provides the essential elements for providing the energy required by our bodies to function. If you would like to know more, such as the role of Enteral Nutrition (EN), indications for EN support, the management and general care of gastrostomy tubes, and assistance with tube feeding then this program is for you!

Learning outcomes for support staff:

Follow personal hygiene and infection control procedures; confirm need and consent for enteral feeding, introduce food via tube according to plan; monitor rate and flow of feeding and take appropriate action to adjust if required; keep stoma area clean and monitor and report signs of infection; check that the tube is correctly positioned, monitor equipment operation; follow procedures to respond to malfunction e.g. blockages, follow procedures to document a request to review mealtime plan where required; liaise with health practitioners to explain/demonstrate requirements (e.g. hospital staff), recognise and respond to symptoms that could require health intervention e.g. reflux, unexpected weight gain or loss, dehydration, allergic reaction, poor chest health.

The above is delivered and assessed through online content and clinical skills workshop.

This program is benchmarked against the NDIS skill descriptors and practice standards. Fun and engaging, this program ensures staff members complete the program with the knowledge and foundational skills to support clients according to the NDIS skill descriptors and practice standards.

Our programs are useful for audit, registration, and re-registration purposes.
